You can make the important decisions without moving every item into the driveway. Start with one manageable shelf, wall or corner. The aim is to identify what stays, what can leave and what needs separate advice before anyone begins lifting.
1. Decide what the space needs to do
Choose a simple goal: park the car, reach the storage shelves or clear a work area. Use that goal to decide where to begin and avoid turning the whole garage into a sorting pile at once.
- Walk the space and identify an accessible starting point.
- Note large furniture, appliances and unusually heavy items.
- Keep a clear route to doors and the pickup area.
- Photograph the areas you want reviewed.
2. Sort ordinary items into four decisions
Labels or a written list can work when an item is too heavy to move yourself. Donation and recycling are possible destinations, not guaranteed outcomes; confirm acceptance before building your plan around them.
- Keep: tools, seasonal items and supplies you still use.
- Try to donate: clean, usable items with a potential recipient.
- Check recycling: identifiable material to confirm with a receiving facility.
- Request removal: approved items you want the operator to quote.
3. Protect what stays
Small items are easy to overlook during a cleanout. Make the boundary between retained and removal items obvious before the operator arrives.
- Label bins and shelves that must remain.
- Set aside documents, keys, valuables and sentimental belongings.
- Check drawers and ordinary storage containers for things you want to keep.
- Leave suspected hazardous material or unknown containers untouched; report them for separate advice.
4. Prepare the pickup details
Send an overview from the garage entrance and a closer view of each removal area. Include the driveway or alley where loading could happen. Describe box and bag contents, attached shelving and anything hidden behind the main pile. You do not need to drag items outside to request a quote.
- Share the address, pickup ZIP and preferred date.
- Describe access and any heavy or unusual items.
- Agree on the included items and areas before paying; point them out again at pickup.
- Approve the quote and pay the full Square invoice before your confirmed pickup.
- Walk the pickup area with the operator afterward and check what remains.
